If neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change, Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is one of the key molecules that helps make that change possible.

BDNF supports the growth, maintenance and survival of neurons while strengthening communication between brain cells. It plays an important role in learning, memory and cognitive function, helping the brain adapt to new experiences throughout life.

Researchers have observed that lower levels of BDNF are often associated with conditions such as chronic stress, depression and age-related cognitive decline. Conversely, activities known to support overall brain health—including regular physical exercise, restorative sleep and stress management—are frequently linked with healthier BDNF activity.

Why Your Breath Matters More Than You Think

Heart rate begins to settle. Muscles soften. Attention becomes less scattered. The parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the “rest and restore” response, becomes more active, allowing the body to recover from the demands of daily life.

This shift creates a more favourable internal environment for learning, emotional regulation and mental clarity—all of which are closely connected with healthy neuroplasticity.

Can Breathing Influence Neuroplasticity?

This is one of the most exciting areas of current research.

Scientists do not yet have definitive evidence that breathing exercises alone directly increase neuroplasticity or BDNF in every individual. The relationship is likely more complex, involving multiple biological pathways that continue to be studied.

However, there is growing evidence that mindfulness practices and controlled breathing can reduce chronic stress, improve emotional regulation and support healthier nervous system function. These changes may, in turn, create conditions that allow the brain’s natural adaptive processes to work more effectively.

Rather than viewing breathing as a miracle solution, it is perhaps more accurate to see it as an important contributor to a broader picture of brain health—working alongside movement, sleep, nutrition, meaningful relationships and meditation.
